West Sacramento is a city in Yolo County, California, separated from Sacramento by the Sacramento River. With a population of 53,915 at the 2020 census, the city has grown steadily from 48,744 residents a decade earlier. In 2014, the United States Conference of Mayors recognized West Sacramento as the Most Livable City in America among cities with fewer than 100,000 residents.
The area's roots trace back to 1844 when John Schwartz, a Flemish traveler, became the first Euro-American to permanently settle there. Schwartz and his brother George established a salmon fishery and began farming on the fertile soil. The region transformed during the gold rush era following the discovery at Sutter's Mill in 1848. In 1849, Margaret McDowell, widowed by the violence of the gold rush, surveyed 160 acres and created the Town of Washington, selling the first lot to August W. Kaye for five hundred dollars. The town flourished as a rest stop along the Sacramento River, attracting businesses including the California Steam Navigation Company in 1859.
Early West Sacramento thrived on diverse industries. Fishermen supplied salmon, sturgeon, catfish, and other river creatures to markets in Sacramento and San Francisco. The valley's rich soil yielded corn, melons, cucumbers, and sweet potatoes, while the dairy industry took root. Notable dairy farmer Mike Bryte later served on the Yolo County Board of Supervisors and as sheriff, with his community eventually bearing his name.
The Town of Washington was renamed Broderick in honor of U.S. Senator David C. Broderick. Three communities—Bryte, Broderick, and West Sacramento—officially incorporated as the City of West Sacramento in 1987.
