Rumsey is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northwestern Yolo County, situated eighteen miles northwest of Esparto in the Capay Valley. The community's origins trace to 1878, when a post office was established nearby and named "Rock" after a local rock landmark. A decade later, in 1888, the post office relocated two miles north to the terminus of the Vaca Valley and Clear Lake Railroad, and the settlement took on a new name. It was christened "Rumsey" in honor of Captain D.C. Rumsey, who owned the land at that time. This early infrastructure connection to the railroad helped shape the community's character.
Rumsey experienced a dramatic natural disaster in the wake of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. A landslide north of the community temporarily blocked Cache Creek, causing the water level to drop significantly in some areas until the creek ran dry. When the creek eventually broke through the earthen dam, it unleashed severe flooding upon Rumsey. Today, Rumsey residents are served by the Esparto Unified School District, and the community remained largely unchanged until it was officially recognized as a census-designated place in the 2020 census.
