The Lansing and Howell Plank Road Company established a toll road completed in 1853, connecting Detroit and Lansing through what is now East Lansing and including seven toll houses along the route.
Michigan State University's establishment in 1857 became the catalyst for the city's development. For decades, the surrounding area remained rural, with most students and faculty living on campus. Residential growth accelerated beginning in 1887 when professors William J. Beal and Rolla C. Carpenter created Collegeville, followed by other subdivisions like College Delta in 1898. The city was formally incorporated in 1907 under the name East Lansing, with Clinton D. Smith serving as its first mayor. The original city charter prohibited alcoholic beverages, maintaining East Lansing as a dry city until 1968. In recent decades, downtown East Lansing has experienced significant construction and redevelopment, transforming historic areas into modern city center complexes at increased population density.
