The village sits approximately five miles southeast of Williamston and about twenty miles southeast of Lansing. With a population of 1,288 at the 2020 census, Webberville spans a total area of 1.84 square miles.
The community has a distinctive history shaped by name changes that reflect its development. Ephraim Meech settled the area in 1837, originally naming it Phelpstown. In 1850, the village was renamed Leroy in honor of Daniel LeRoy, the first Attorney General of Michigan. However, when the post office was reestablished in 1867, another town in Michigan already claimed the name Leroy, necessitating another change. The village was then renamed Webberville after Hubert Webber, the postmaster at that time. This final name has remained in place for over 150 years, connecting the community to the early postal service that helped establish its identity. Today, Webberville continues as a small but established community in central Michigan, maintaining its character as a village within the greater Ingham County region.
