Mason is a city in central Michigan and the county seat of Ingham County, with a population of 8,283 according to the 2020 census. The city was named after Stevens T. Mason, Michigan's first governor. Its history begins in 1836 when Charles Noble, anticipating Michigan's statehood, purchased forested land, cleared twenty acres, and founded Mason Center. Though the city lost out when the state selected Lansing as its capital in 1847, Noble successfully established Mason as the county seat instead. The economy flourished in its early decades through sawmills, carriage and cart factories, copper shops, a steam flourmill, and a buffalo robe manufacturer. Mason was incorporated as a village in 1865 and became a city in 1875. During the 1800s, Mason served as the hub of Ingham County activity, even surpassing Lansing in importance. In 1877, when Lansing attempted to claim county seat status, the two cities reached a compromise that moved some county offices to Lansing while Mason retained its position as county seat, making Michigan the only state where the capital is not also a county seat. The local Ojibwa tribe maintained a visible presence in town into the early 1900s. More recently, the Wyeth Corporation produced baby formula here until the 1990s, while today Dart Container Corporation maintains its headquarters in Mason. The city sits upon the Mason Esker, one of the longest eskers in the western hemisphere, and Sycamore Creek flows through its boundaries.
