Leslie is a small city in Ingham County, Michigan, with a population of 2,167 at the 2020 census. Located 28 miles south of Lansing and 17 miles north of Jackson, Leslie sits on gently rolling hills just east of US 127, near Meridian-Baseline State Park. The city covers 1.29 square miles and is surrounded by Leslie Township, though the two remain independently administered.
The area was first settled by Elijah Woodworth in 1836, who built the city's first log cabin. Originally called Meekerville after pioneer Benjamin Meeker, the town was renamed Leslie by Jerry G. Cornell, who chose the name after a prominent family from his native eastern New York. The post office officially adopted the Leslie name in 1841. The community incorporated as a village in 1869 and became a city in 1968.
Leslie's geography is shaped by water features, including Huntoon Creek, which flows from Huntoon Lake through downtown and past the city's Little League Baseball fields. Several other creeks also run through the area.
