Haslett is a census-designated place in Ingham County, Michigan, located mostly within Meridian Charter Township with a small portion extending into Williamstown Township. With a 2020 population of 19,670, the community maintains its own school district and post office, serving the 48840 ZIP Code area.
The community's history is rooted in the spiritualist movement of the late 1800s. Haslett was named after James and Sarah Haslett, who founded the Nemoka Spiritualist Camp on the shore of Pine Lake, the original name for Lake Lansing. The spiritualist movement in the Lansing area began in 1882, and by the later 1800s, thousands of spiritualists gathered in Haslett Park for summer meetings, readings, lectures, and séances. Following James Haslett's death in 1891 and the decline of spiritualism, his widow sold the land to the Haslett Park Association in 1898. The new owners transformed the site into a summer recreational destination, eventually adding a figure-8 wooden roller coaster and carnival rides to create Lake Lansing Amusement Park. With railroad access already established, the Lansing Trolley line extended service from the state capital to this new recreation center.
Today, Haslett continues this recreational heritage as home to Lake Lansing Parks North and South, a 461-acre lake featuring two public parks with beaches, fishing, and boat launches. The Michigan State University Sailing Club and Lansing Sailing Club are located on the lake. Business Loop I-69 runs through the northwest portion of the community, connecting to Interstate 69 in Clinton County and west to Lansing.
