Felton is a census-designated place in Santa Cruz County, California, with a population of 4,489 as of the 2020 census. The community sits on land that was traditionally part of the Sayant territory, an Awaswas-speaking group of the Ohlone people. After the Sayant were sent to Mission Santa Cruz, the San Lorenzo Valley remained largely unpopulated until the 1830s, when Rancho Zayante was established at the confluence of the San Lorenzo River and Zayante Creek. The rancho eventually came under the control of Isaac Graham, who operated a lumber mill there. Following California statehood in 1850, gold discoveries along western tributaries of the San Lorenzo River attracted miners to the area. Combined with lumbermen and their families, these newcomers formed a community initially called San Lorenzo. In 1868, the town was renamed Felton, probably after former Oakland mayor John B. Felton. Though an ambitious railroad scheme failed to materialize, Felton thrived as a center for lumber, lime, and mining industries. By 1875, it became a terminus for both the San Lorenzo Valley Logging Flume from Boulder Creek and the Santa Cruz and Felton Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1878 but disincorporated in 1917. Today, Felton is home to notable historical attractions including the Felton Covered Bridge, built in 1892 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Roaring Camp Railroad, which began steam-powered tourist operations in 1963 at the Old Felton Depot.
