Scotts Valley is a small city in the Santa Cruz Mountains, located about thirty miles south of San Jose and six miles north of Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz County, California. With a population of 12,224 according to the 2020 census, the city was incorporated in 1966 and is primarily accessed by State Route 17, which connects the two larger cities.
The area has a deep human history. Archaeological evidence shows that people settled in Scotts Valley between nine thousand and twelve thousand years ago, when a substantial lake occupied the valley's lowest elevation. As the climate warmed during the Mid-Holocene period around four to five thousand years ago, this lake drained and became what is now Carbonera Creek. Around 2000 BC, the Ohlone people established communities in the region, living near creeks and water sources while using surrounding lands for hunting and gathering acorns and seeds.
The modern city takes its name from Hiram Daniel Scott, who purchased Rancho San Agustin in 1850. The valley's first European settler was José Bolcoff, originally a Russian fur trader named Osip Volkov who jumped ship in Monterey Bay around 1815 and later became a Mexican citizen. Scott built a Greek Revival house in 1853, which still stands behind City Hall as a National Register landmark.
Throughout its history, Scotts Valley's economy has centered on various industries including lumber, grain milling, leather tanning, and later peat moss extraction. The area also developed as a tourism destination, home to attractions like Santa's Village, a Christmas-themed amusement park that opened in 1957 and operated for over two decades.
