This community was depopulated by a smallpox epidemic early in the nineteenth century. In the late 1880s, Gilman Hot Springs developed into a hot springs resort, capitalizing on its natural thermal features and elevation of 1,525 feet above sea level. The resort remained operational until 1978. During the 1970s, the area became known for attracting boxers who trained at the Massacre Canyon Inn, where the elevation proved beneficial for their conditioning. By around 1973, the Gilman family owned approximately 500 acres that included a major hotel and golf club called Massacre Canyon Inn, a 27-hole golf course, several motel and apartment complexes, numerous leased homes, a large bathhouse, the family residence, and a U.S. post office building. Today, the Church of Scientology's Gold Base complex is located in Gilman Hot Springs.
