Thermal is an unincorporated community in the Coachella Valley of Riverside County, situated approximately twenty-five miles southeast of Palm Springs and nine and a half miles north of the Salton Sea. The 2020 census recorded a population of 2,676 residents. Thermal began as a railroad camp in 1910, originally known as Kokell, established for Southern Pacific Railroad employees. Agricultural development through canal irrigation transformed the area into thriving greenery by the 1950s. The former Camp Young U.S. Naval Air station was converted into Thermal Airport by 1965, later renamed Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport. In the early 1990s, State Route 86 was constructed as a four-lane highway over an earlier transportation route. Today, the community is served by the Coachella Valley Unified School District and has access to College of the Desert's East Valley Educational Center satellite campus, located at the corner of 62nd Avenue and Buchanan Street.
