As American settlers arrived following the Mexican-American War, conflict with native tribes intensified. A pivotal moment came in 1857 when a stagecoach line began operating through the valley. By 1859, Temecula established the first inland Southern California post office at the Magee Store, making it the state's second post office after San Francisco.
