Mecca is an unincorporated community in Riverside County, California, situated on the north shore of the Salton Sea in the Eastern Coachella Valley. As of the 2020 census, the community was home to 8,219 residents. The landscape surrounding Mecca was dramatically shaped by early twentieth-century water development. Between 1905 and 1906, engineers redirecting the Colorado River to irrigate the desert inadvertently flooded the Salton Sink, creating the Salton Sea and inundating salt mines that had supplied salt for centuries. Today, groundwater and the Coachella Canal have transformed the desert into productive agricultural land.
Community infrastructure expanded significantly in the 2000s following a housing discrimination settlement.
