Wildomar is a city in southwestern Riverside County, California, with a rich history tied to railroad development and land settlement. The community was incorporated on July 1, 2008, becoming the twenty-fifth city in Riverside County, and has experienced remarkable growth in the early twenty-first century. The area's development began in the early 1880s when Franklin Heald of Pasadena recognized the potential of the region near Lake Elsinore. In 1883, Heald partnered with William Collier and Donald Graham to purchase Rancho La Laguna, comprising over twelve thousand acres. The California Southern Railroad, which arrived in the area in 1884, proved instrumental to Wildomar's early growth. The town's name came from combining the names of its founders: Wil for William Collier, do for Donald Graham, and mar for Margaret Collier Graham. By 1887, Wildomar had developed into a thriving community with a hotel, shops, blacksmith, and even its own newspaper. However, railroad service to the area was eventually abandoned in 1935, slowing development significantly. The city's fortunes changed again with the completion of the Temecula Valley Freeway in the early 1980s, which sparked renewed growth and prosperity that continues today.
