Bellflower is a city located in southeastern Los Angeles County, within the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. Founded in 1906 by real estate investor F.E. Woodruff, the city was originally called Somerset when its post office was established in 1909. The name was changed to Bellflower after the US Post Office rejected Somerset to avoid confusion with Somerset, Colorado. The present name derives from the bellflower apple, which was grown in local orchards during the early 1900s.
Originally settled by dairy farmers of Dutch, Japanese, and Portuguese descent, Bellflower served as a center for apple production and later milk production for Southern California. The area's rich farmland was watered by artesian wells and floodwaters from the San Gabriel River. After World War II, rising property values prompted most farmers to relocate east to what became the cities of Cerritos, La Palma, and Cypress. Their farmland was converted into residential subdivisions to house the region's growing workforce in skilled industrial and service sectors. The city was incorporated on September 3, 1957, and subsequently transformed into an urban residential suburb.
Today, Bellflower is a highly diverse community with a notable population of Dutch descent, home to some of the only Dutch grocery stores in the United States.
