San Marino is an affluent city located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It was incorporated on April 25, 1913, bringing together three primary ranchos—Wilson, Patton, and Huntington—along with subdivided areas from smaller properties. The city takes its name from the ancient Republic of San Marino in Europe, a connection reflected in its municipal seal, which depicts the Three Towers of San Marino and features five stars representing the city's governing body.
The site's history extends back to the Tongva (Gabrieleño) Indians who originally inhabited the area. After Mexican independence, a land grant of 128 acres was given to Victoria Bartolmea Reid, a Gabrieleña Indian, in 1838. Her property, Rancho Huerta de Cuati, eventually passed to James DeBarth Shorb in 1873, who renamed it San Marino after his grandfather's Maryland plantation. In 1903, Henry E. Huntington purchased the rancho and built a large mansion; the site is now home to the Huntington Library, which houses a world-renowned art collection, research library, and botanical gardens.
George Smith Patton served as San Marino's first mayor. His son was the World War II general George S. Patton Jr. The city has undergone significant demographic changes. In 1970, it was 99.7 percent White, but by 2000, Asian households comprised 40 percent of the population. In recent decades, immigrants of Chinese and Taiwanese ancestry have come to represent more than 60 percent of residents, reflecting the San Gabriel Valley's popularity among East Asian immigrants. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,513.
