Santa Monica developed into a popular seaside resort during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with the creation of attractions including Palisades Park, the Santa Monica Pier, Ocean Park, and the Hotel Casa del Mar. The city became an important industrial center when Donald Wills Douglas Sr. built an aircraft plant in 1922 at Clover Field. During World War II, Douglas facilities employed as many as 44,000 people. Today, Santa Monica hosts headquarters for major companies including Hulu, Activision Blizzard, Universal Music Group, Snap Inc., and others, maintaining its reputation as a vibrant resort town known for its climate, beaches, and hospitality industry. The city is completely surrounded by Los Angeles.
