Brea, whose name comes from the Spanish word for tar, is a city of 47,325 residents located in northern Orange County, about 25 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The area was home to the Tongva people for thousands of years before Spanish explorers arrived in 1769. The Portolá expedition camped in Brea Canyon near a native village, marking the first European contact with the inland region.
The city's modern history began in the late 1800s when oil was discovered in the area. In 1894, the Union Oil Company of California purchased 1,200 acres west of the village of Olinda, and by 1898 the Brea-Olinda Oil Field was in production. The village of Randolph, founded in 1908 for oil workers and their families, eventually merged with Olinda. On February 23, 1917, Brea was officially incorporated as Orange County's eighth city with a population of 752.
As oil production declined, agriculture flourished, particularly Valencia oranges grown in the cool foothills, followed by lemon and citrus groves. The 1920s Chamber of Commerce promoted the city with the slogan "Oil, Oranges, and Opportunity." By 1950, the population had grown to 3,208. Development accelerated in the following decades with the opening of the Orange Freeway and Brea Mall in the 1970s. In 2000, a redeveloped downtown area opened featuring shops, restaurants, theaters, and entertainment venues. Today, Brea remains a significant retail center with an extensive public art program that began in 1975 and includes over 140 artworks throughout the city.
