Stanton is a city in northern Orange County, California, located within the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Incorporated in 1956 and operating under a council-manager form of government, the city today covers 3.15 square miles and had a population of 37,962 at the 2020 census. It is bordered by Cypress to the west and Anaheim to the north and east, with Garden Grove situated to its south and east.
The area's history stretches back to the Spanish colonial period, when northern Orange County was granted to Manuel Nieto in 1784 as part of Rancho Los Nietos. After his death, his heirs divided the land into five smaller ranchos, with present-day Stanton lying roughly across Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Coyotes. Transportation transformed the region when the Los Angeles Interurban Railway began service on the Santa Ana Line in 1905, running a nearly straight path between Watts and Santa Ana. This accessibility spurred population growth in the rural area.
The territory was originally named Benedict by the railway but was renamed Stanton in 1911 after Philip A. Stanton, a Republican assemblyman for Los Angeles from 1903 to 1909. The city first incorporated in 1911, becoming the largest city in Orange County by area at that time. The incorporation was motivated partly by concerns over Anaheim's plans for a sewage facility. However, residents voted to dis-incorporate in 1924 to avoid road-building costs.
