Irvine is a planned city in central Orange County, California, developed over centuries of transformative change. For thousands of years, the Kizh people, also known as the Gabrieleño, inhabited the area before European contact. Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá arrived in 1769, establishing forts, missions, and cattle herds. Following Mexico's independence in 1821, the Mexican government secularized missions and distributed land through grants, creating three major ranchos that eventually became the Irvine Ranch.
In 1864, James Irvine and his partners acquired Rancho San Joaquín, and by 1878, Irvine had purchased his partners' interests, holding 110,000 acres stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Santa Ana River. When the Santa Fe Railroad extended to the area in 1888, a station was established and named in honor of James Irvine. His son, James Irvine II, transformed ranching operations to include field crops, olives, and citrus. By 1918, the ranch produced 60,000 acres of lima beans.
During the twentieth century, the Irvine Company gradually opened the ranch to urban development. In 1959, the University of California established a new campus on Irvine Company land, prompting master plans for a planned city of 50,000 people. The original agricultural town of Irvine was renamed East Irvine to distinguish it from the new development. The city formally incorporated on December 28, 1971, growing substantially beyond the original vision. Today, Irvine stands as the second most populous city in Orange County with a thriving technology sector and major educational institutions.
