Cypress is a city in northwestern Orange County with a 2020 population of 50,151. Originally nicknamed Waterville for its abundant artesian wells, the area was incorporated in 1956 as Dairy City by local dairy farmers seeking to preserve their operations against development pressures, following the model of neighboring communities like Dairy Valley and Dairyland. However, post-World War II land values made agricultural use unsustainable, and by the 1970s, dairies had largely disappeared as developers transformed the landscape into residential neighborhoods. In 1957, residents voted to rename the city Cypress, taking the name from Cypress Elementary School, built in 1895. The school's name derived from cypress trees planted to shield the building from seasonal Santa Ana winds. When the Pacific Electric Railway's Santa Ana Line was completed in 1906, a new station on Walker Street at Lincoln Avenue also adopted the Cypress name, since Waterville had already been used elsewhere in the system.
Today, Cypress is a diverse and densely populated community covering 6.6 square miles. According to 2023 estimates, Asian Americans comprise 37.1 percent of the population, while white, non-Hispanic residents make up 33.5 percent, and Hispanic or Latino residents account for 20.4 percent. The city celebrates its heritage annually through the Cypress Community Festival, inaugurated in 1981. Currently held on the fourth Saturday in July at Oak Knoll Park, the festival has become one of Orange County's largest single-day events.
