San Clemente is a coastal city in southern Orange County, California, situated roughly midway between Los Angeles and San Diego. Named in 1925 after San Clemente Island, which explorer Sebastián Vizcaino had named in 1602 after Saint Clement, the city has earned its slogan "Spanish Village by the Sea." The area has deep roots. The Acjachemen are the Indigenous people of San Clemente, and in 1776, Father Junípero Serra founded Mission San Juan Capistrano nearby, after which local indigenous people became known as the Juaneños. Following American conquest of California in 1848, the land eventually passed through several hands until 1925, when former Seattle Mayor Ole Hanson purchased 2,000 acres and designed one of the country's first master planned communities. Hanson envisioned a Mediterranean-style coastal resort town and built public structures including a pier, beach club, and community center. The city was officially incorporated on February 27, 1928.
San Clemente is known for its beaches, Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, and thriving hospitality industry. The iconic San Clemente Pier, first constructed in 1928, has been rebuilt twice since. The city gained national prominence in 1969 when President Richard Nixon purchased part of the H. H. Cotton estate, which he named La Casa Pacifica and used as his vacation residence. After his resignation, Nixon returned to San Clemente to write his memoirs before selling the property in 1980.
