La Jolla is a neighborhood in San Diego, California, stretching 7 miles along the Pacific Coast. Located 12 miles north of downtown San Diego, it borders Pacific Beach to the south and extends north to include Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. During the Mexican period, La Jolla was mapped as pueblo land with about 60 lots. The 1880s real estate boom brought Frank T. Botsford and George W. Heald to further develop the area. The San Diego, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla Railway, built in the 1890s, connected La Jolla to the rest of San Diego and transformed it into a resort destination, complete with a bathhouse and dance pavilion. By 1900, La Jolla comprised 100 buildings and 350 residents.
Journalist and philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps settled in La Jolla in 1896, where she lived for 35 years. She devoted her wealth to numerous civic projects, commissioning many notable buildings through architects Irving Gill and Louis John Gill. Her legacy includes Scripps Memorial Hospital, founded in 1924, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, established in 1903 with her financial support and now a key research institution.
