By the early 1900s, San Marcos had developed into a functioning town with stores, a post office, and schools. Farming dominated the economy through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, later joined by dairies and poultry production. The city's transformation accelerated dramatically starting in 1956, when Colorado River water arrived for the first time. San Marcos incorporated on January 28, 1963, and became the state's third fastest-growing city during the 1970s. Today, San Marcos is home to California State University San Marcos and Palomar College, and is bordered by Escondido, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Vista.
