Belleville is a western suburb of Detroit located in Wayne County, Michigan, situated roughly 29 miles southwest of downtown Detroit and completely surrounded by Van Buren Township. The city takes its name from landowner James Bell, with the French word for "beautiful town" cleverly incorporated into the community's identity. The hamlet was platted in 1847 with Main, Liberty, and High Street still serving as principal thoroughfares today.
Positioned along the Huron River, which served as a natural trade route, Belleville became a thriving center for lumber businesses in its early years, with sawmills operating along the riverbanks. The community was established as a village in 1905 when its governance separated from Van Buren Township through an act of the State Legislature. Around 1881, the Belleville depot on the Detroit line of the Wabash Railroad began connecting the area to travelers from across the region and country.
A defining moment came in early 1926 when the Detroit Edison Company built the French Landing Dam on the Huron River east of Belleville, creating Belleville Lake. The lake became the city's principal geographic feature and the largest inland lake in Wayne County, stretching six miles and covering 1,200 acres. The traditional downtown nestles on the southern shore of this scenic lake. Belleville achieved city status on May 14, 1946. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 4,008.
