Romulus is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan, situated roughly twenty miles southwest of downtown Detroit. As a western suburb of the city, Romulus is perhaps best known as the location of Detroit Metropolitan Airport. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 25,178 residents.
The area's early settlement history stretches back to the 1820s. Samuel Polyne, a French Canadian, was the first white settler, arriving in 1826, though he departed after the township was officially organized in 1835. Samuel McMath moved to the region from New York in 1827 and is recognized as the first settler in the village proper, though he died before bringing his family to the area. The settlement that would become Romulus grew around what locals called "Pullen's Corners," established in 1833 when Jenks Pullen and his six sons settled at the intersection of what is now Ozga and Goddard roads. The township of Romulus was officially set off from Huron Township on March 17, 1835, and the first township meeting convened on April 16, 1835. The township briefly changed its name to Wayne in 1845 before reverting to Romulus in 1848. Romulus incorporated as a city in 1970.
The community played a significant role in the Underground Railroad during the 1800s. Two structures that served as stops remain intact today, including the Samuel Kingsley Home, where slaves were hidden in an underground cellar, and the White Church at Five Points, both important landmarks in Romulus's history.
