Flat Rock is a city in southern Wayne County, Michigan, with a small portion extending into Monroe County. At the 2020 census, the population was 10,541. The area has deep historical roots, beginning as a Wyandot settlement that still functioned as a reservation in 1830. A French priest, Father Jean Dilhet, first documented settlers in 1798, referring to a "Grosse Roche" settlement named after limestone rock outcroppings along the Huron River. The first European-American settlers, Michael Vreeland and his five sons, arrived between 1811 and 1820, purchasing 800 acres and constructing the first grain and lumber mills. The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838, when the family sold their land. When the Erie Canal opened in 1825, new settlers arrived, and by 1828 the village had grown to include four stores, two saw mills, a wool carding mill, and a flour mill serving local farmers. The village was platted in 1838 and incorporated as a city in 1965. Henry Ford's establishment of the Ford Motor Company Lamp Factory along the Huron River in 1925 marked a significant turning point in the city's industrial development. The Flat Rock Dam was constructed to provide hydroelectricity to the factory. Today, descendants of the Vreeland family, now in their seventh generation, continue to live in the town they founded.
