Westland is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, located about eighteen miles west of downtown Detroit. As of 2022, the city had a population of 84,037. Before European settlement in the early nineteenth century, the area was home to a Potawatomi Native American village, while other Algonquian tribes used it as hunting territory. White settlers began arriving around 1824. The township went through several name changes, first becoming Bucklin Township in 1827, then being divided into Lima and Nankin townships in 1829 due to postal naming conflicts. Nankin Township remained largely rural until World War II, when the Norwayne subdivision was built to house returning soldiers working in nearby factories. By 1960, the township's population had grown to 70,000, making it Michigan's largest township. The opening of the Westland Shopping Center in 1965 spurred growth and prompted township residents to incorporate as a city. On May 16, 1966, Nankin Township became the City of Westland, at that time the fourth largest city in Wayne County. Today, the city covers 20.45 square miles and is served by the Wayne-Westland Community School District, alongside various other school districts serving portions of the city. Kevin Coleman serves as mayor, while the City Council consists of seven members led by President Mike McDermott.
