Gibraltar is a city located in Wayne County in southern Michigan, situated approximately twelve miles south of Detroit along the Detroit River. With a population of 4,997 according to the 2020 census, Gibraltar serves as part of the greater Metro Detroit area. The city spans 4.41 square miles, with about 3.78 square miles of land and 0.63 square miles of water. Gibraltar is bordered by the Detroit River to the east, the city of Trenton to the north, and Brownstown Township to the south and west.
The community's history stretches back to 1811 when it was first settled. Gibraltar was officially platted on March 14, 1837, by trustees of the Gibralter and Flat Rock Company. The area's postal history reflects its evolving identity, receiving its first post office under the name Gibralter in October 1837. The name changed to Woodbury in 1838 before reverting to Gibralter in 1839, and the spelling was standardized to Gibraltar in 1900. The post office was discontinued in 1910. Originally part of Brownstown Township, Gibraltar incorporated as a village in 1954 and achieved city status in 1961. Today, the Gibraltar School District provides public education to the community, operating Parsons Elementary School, Shumate Middle School, and Carlson High School, serving residents of Gibraltar and surrounding areas.
