Grosse Ile Township is a civil township in Wayne County, Michigan, composed of twelve islands in the Detroit River, with a population of 10,777 at the 2020 census. The largest island, Grosse Ile itself, was named by French explorers in 1679, the name meaning "Big Island" in French. The island was originally called Kitcheminishen by the Potawatomi people, who occupied it for a long period before European contact. After passing under British rule in 1763 following the French and Indian War, the island remained largely unsettled by European Americans until after American independence. The Potawatomi deeded the island to brothers Alexander and William Macomb in 1776, and these fur traders and merchants are considered the founders of the European-American community there. Actual settlement began in the nineteenth century, with several historic homes still standing from this era, including the Rucker Homestead, portions of which date to 1816. Grosse Ile Township itself was formally organized in 1914 after splitting from Monguagon Township. Today, the township spans 18.67 square miles, with approximately half of that area being water. The main island is technically composed of two islands, separated by the Thorofare Canal, and is connected to the mainland by two bridges. Grosse Ile Township remains one of only seven municipalities in Michigan consisting entirely of islands.
