Crockett, a census-designated place in Contra Costa County's East Bay sub-region, sits 28 miles northeast of San Francisco with a population of 3,242 as of the 2020 census. The community takes its name from Joseph B. Crockett, a California Supreme Court judge, and was founded when Thomas Edwards Sr. purchased 1,800 acres from Judge Crockett in 1866. Edwards built his home in 1867 and established the first general store, with his residence still standing today as "The Old Homestead," a California Historical Landmark. The Crockettville post office opened in 1883, and the town's name was shortened to Crockett that same year.
Crockett's destiny changed dramatically in 1906 when Hawaiian sugar cane growers purchased an existing beet sugar factory and transformed it into the heart of a company town. The California and Hawaiian Sugar Company, known as C&H, became the dominant force in the community, eventually employing about 95 percent of residents by the 1920s, with employment peaking at 2,500 just before World War II. The company supported employees in building homes and funded school and civic programs. By the 1960s, however, revenues declined significantly, leading to layoffs and community challenges. Following the final shipment of Hawaiian sugar in 2017, the refinery now processes raw sugar from Australia, the Philippines, Nicaragua, and other countries. Today, Crockett remains situated where the Carquinez Strait meets San Pablo Bay, connected to nearby Vallejo by the Carquinez Bridge.
