Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, California, situated in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, approximately 16 miles east of Oakland and 25 miles east of San Francisco. According to the 2020 census, the city has a population of 70,127 and serves as a strategic junction where Interstate 680 and State Route 24 intersect, making it accessible by BART as well. The city borders Clayton, Lafayette, Alamo, Pleasant Hill, and Concord.
The area's history stretches back to three bands of Bay Miwok Native Americans: the Saclan, the Volvon, and the Tactan. Later, the city developed within four extensive Mexican land grants, including Rancho Arroyo de Las Nueces y Bolbones, an 18,000-acre grant belonging to Juana Sanchez de Pacheco. The grant was named after the principal waterway, Arroyo de las Nueces, which translates to Walnut Creek and was named for the local Juglans hindsii walnut tree species. One of Sanchez de Pacheco's grandsons, Ygnacio Sibrian, built the first roofed home in the valley around 1850.
Following American settlement after the Mexican-American War, a small settlement called "The Corners" emerged at the junction of roads from Pacheco and Lafayette. William Slusher built the first dwelling on Walnut Creek's bank in 1849. The arrival of Southern Pacific Railroad service in 1891 spurred development, and on October 21, 1914, the town was incorporated as Contra Costa County's eighth city. The opening of Broadway Shopping Center in 1951, the county's first major retail center, catalyzed suburban growth, with the population quadrupling from 2,460 in 1950 to 9,903 by 1960.
