With a population of 43,357 according to the 2020 census, Oakley is the newest incorporated city in Contra Costa County, having gained that status in 1999. The city's name derives from Old English origins, meaning "meadow of oak trees," which aptly described the landscape when the area was first settled. The name was chosen over "Dewey" when city founder Randolph C. Marsh and his friend Joel D. Wightman settled their disagreement over a game of cribbage, with Wightman's preference prevailing.
The Oakley area has a rich history spanning centuries. Archeologists have found prehistoric sites throughout the region, with the Bay Miwok people occupying the area between 1100 and 1770 AD. Spanish explorers, including the De Anza expedition of 1775-76, ventured into the region but did not establish permanent settlements. Americans began arriving in the nineteenth century, and Oakley's first post office was established in 1898.
