Rodeo is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area on the eastern shore of San Pablo Bay, about 25 miles northeast of San Francisco. The community takes its name from the Spanish word for cattle roundup, reflecting its origins in the late 19th century when cattle from the surrounding hills were regularly driven through the old town district to loading docks on the bay's shoreline for shipment to slaughterhouses, a practice that continued into the early 20th century. The town's development began when ranchers and businessmen John and Patrick Tormey purchased land from the Ygnacio Martinez Rancho El Pinole estate in 1865 and 1867. In 1890, Patrick Tormey partnered with the Union Stockyard Co. to develop stockyard facilities for meatpacking and canning operations, laying out streets and preparing homesteads that became the town of Rodeo. The first post office opened in 1892. Though the community faced challenges including the 1893 recession and the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Rodeo managed to rebuild and continue. Today it has a population of 9,653 according to the 2020 census. The community is served by Interstate 80 and State Route 4, though it has not been a railroad stop since the 1950s. A large oil refinery, built in 1896 and currently operated by Phillips 66, remains a significant presence in the area.
