Hercules is a city in western Contra Costa County, situated along San Pablo Bay about ten miles north of Berkeley. With a population of 26,016 according to the 2020 census, it is home to a very ethnically diverse community. The city's origins trace back to 1881 when the California Powder Works established a manufacturing facility to produce Hercules powder, a specially patented dynamite formulation named after the Roman hero. In 1882, the Hercules Powder Company took over operations, and the small company town that developed around the facility was incorporated at the end of 1900. The city's early history was shaped by this industrial enterprise, though it came at considerable human cost—fifty-nine lives were lost in the first thirty-eight years of operations, including twenty-four in a large explosion in February 1908. By 1917, Hercules had become the nation's largest TNT producer and supplied explosives to the U.S. Navy during both World Wars. The company town itself was considered the area's most desirable place to live, featuring well-kept homes, a clubhouse, tennis courts, and a hospital, though all residents were company employees. Explosive manufacturing ceased in 1964, and after the ammonia plant closed in 1976, the protective buffer land around the facility opened for development. Beginning in the 1970s, Hercules transformed into the suburban bedroom community it remains today, lying along the I-80 corridor in western Contra Costa County.
