Pacheco is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California, with a population of 4,183 according to the 2020 census. Located between Martinez to the north and west, Concord to the east, and Pleasant Hill to the south, this small community occupies just 0.7 square miles.
The town was laid out in 1857 by Dr. J. H. Carothers and named for Salvio Pacheco, who received the Rancho Monte del Diablo Mexican land grant. During the mid-1800s, Pacheco flourished as a major commercial center and shipping port. From 1851 to nearly 1873, it served as the county's primary port for grain grown in the Ygnacio, San Ramon, and Tassajara valleys. The deep Walnut Creek, then called Pacheco Creek, enabled ocean-based shipping directly to Suisun Bay, and the town supported warehouses, a flour mill, and various shops along the waterway.
However, Pacheco's prosperity declined as the shipping channel gradually deteriorated due to man-made ecological damage combined with fires, floods, and an earthquake during the 1860s. These disasters filled Pacheco Slough with silt, mirroring the fate of ancient ports like Ephesus and Troy. As the commercial center declined, residents migrated to the nearby town of Todos Santos, later renamed Concord.
A post office operated in Pacheco from 1859 to 1913 and resumed operation in 1955. Today, Pacheco remains an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, with a warm-summer Mediterranean climate and diverse demographic composition serving as a residential area in the greater Bay Area.
