Arcadia is a city located in Los Angeles County, California, approximately thirteen miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. The city takes its name from Arcadia, Greece. For over eight thousand years before European contact, the Tongva people, also known as the Gabrieleño tribe, inhabited the area as part of their broader territory spanning the greater Los Angeles Basin and surrounding valleys. A Tongva settlement within present-day Arcadia was known as Alyeupkigna. The site later became part of Spanish Mission San Gabriel Arcángel lands in 1771. Following Mexican independence, Rancho Santa Anita was granted to Perfecto Hugo Reid and his Tongva wife Victoria Bartolomea Comicrabit in 1845. The rancho eventually came under the ownership of Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin in 1875, when he purchased eight thousand acres for two hundred thousand dollars. Baldwin developed the area into a town, building the Hotel Oakwood in 1889 and overseeing Arcadia's incorporation as a city in 1903, serving as its first mayor. By the early twentieth century, the city's economy centered on entertainment, sporting, hospitality, and gambling opportunities. During World War I, Arcadia hosted the U.S. Army's Ross Field Balloon School at the present-day Santa Anita Park site. Through the 1920s and 1930s, Arcadia transitioned from agricultural lands and chicken ranches to a residential community with civic improvements including a library and city hall. Today, the city is home to the Santa Anita Park racetrack, the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, and Arcadia County Park. The 2020 census recorded a population of fifty-six thousand six hundred eighty-one.
