Avalon is the only incorporated city on Santa Catalina Island and the southernmost city in Los Angeles County. Before European contact, the island was home to the Tongva people, who valued it for its abundant soapstone used in cooking vessels. By the 1830s, however, the native population had either died or been forcibly relocated to mainland missions and ranches.
The modern settlement began in the 1860s when German immigrant Augustus William Timms established a sheep herding business and ferry service, bringing pleasure seekers to Avalon Bay for bathing and fishing. By 1883, the area had grown to include thirty tents and three wooden buildings. Real estate speculator George Shatto purchased the island in 1887 and created the first resort settlement, building the original Hotel Metropole and pier. Shatto's sister-in-law Etta Whitney named the city Avalon, inspired by Lord Tennyson's poem about King Arthur's legendary island.
After Shatto's financial difficulties, the Banning brothers acquired the island in 1891 and successfully developed it as a resort destination, constructing a dance pavilion, aquarium, and gambling club. A devastating fire in 1915 destroyed half the city's buildings, including six hotels. In 1919, chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. bought controlling interest and invested millions in improvements, including the iconic Catalina Casino completed in 1929. Wrigley also brought the Chicago Cubs to the island for spring training from 1921 to 1951. Today, Avalon attracts approximately one million visitors annually and serves as a thriving resort community with a population of 3,460.
