South Gate is a city of 7.4 square miles located seven miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles in Los Angeles County's Gateway Cities region. Incorporated on January 20, 1923, the city took its name from the South Gate Gardens on the Cudahy Ranch, with the name referring to its location south of Los Angeles. At the time of incorporation, the population was around 2,500 people.
The area has deep historical roots. South Gate lies within the traditional cultural territory of the Gabrielino people, and early Spanish settlers, including the prominent Lugo family, established themselves here through land grants. In 1810, Don Antonio Maria Lugo received a royal Spanish grant of 30,000 acres, land that would eventually become the city. The Tweedy family also played an important role, purchasing approximately 2,000 acres and giving their name to the downtown Tweedy Mile business district.
The city's development transformed dramatically during the twentieth century. Agricultural land gave way to suburban housing and industrial growth, particularly between 1910 and 1940. By 1940, South Gate had become a major industrial hub with over 35 factories producing chemicals, machinery, furniture, and roofing materials. The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, which opened a plant in December 1927, exemplified this industrial expansion. This boom continued, reaching over 400 industries by 1976.
In 1965, South Gate adopted the azalea as its official symbol, earning the nickname "Azalea City." The city received national recognition when it won the All-America City Award from the National Civic League in 1990. Today, with a 2020 census population of 92,726, South Gate ranks as the 19th largest city in Los Angeles County.
