La Verne is a city in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, situated about thirty miles east of Los Angeles in the Pomona Valley. With a 2020 census population of 31,334, this suburban community has deep historical roots. Lord surveyed the land for building lots and in 1887 held a large sale, naming the new town Lordsburg after himself. Four members of the German Baptist Brethren Church purchased the Lordsburg Hotel and founded Lordsburg College there in 1891. The town was incorporated as La Verne in 1906. The area flourished as a center of the citrus industry, earning the nickname "Heart of the Orange Empire," before the industry slowly faded after World War II. Today, two orange groves on the grounds of the La Verne Heritage Foundation preserve this agricultural heritage. Located below the San Gabriel Mountains foothills and bisected by both California State Route 210 and Historic U.S. Route 66, La Verne maintains its position as a vibrant San Gabriel Valley community.
