By April's end, more than 200,000 had visited the sales office and over 1,000 families had purchased homes, with sales averaging 30 homes daily and peaking at 107 homes sold in a single hour. The construction pace was remarkable, with 17,500 houses completed in less than three years. New homes were finished at such speed that a house was completed every seven and a half minutes, with a record 110 finished in one day. In 1954, Lakewood became the largest community in the nation to incorporate as a city and pioneered an innovative approach to municipal services.
