Lawndale is a city in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County, California. The Tongva tribe, native to the area, lived here long before Spanish colonization. From the 1780s onward, the land that would become Lawndale was part of Rancho Sausal Redondo, a Spanish land grant encompassing much of the South Bayshore region. In 1905, Charles B. Hopper subdivided the area and named it after the Chicago neighborhood of the same name, though lots sold slowly despite various promotional efforts, including marketing it as a chicken raising destination. Early transportation came through the Inglewood Division of the Redondo Railway, which ran down what is now Hawthorne Boulevard until 1933, followed by the Santa Fe railroad's arrival in 1927. After World War II, Lawndale developed as a bedroom community to house returning veterans and newcomers to California. The city was officially incorporated on December 28, 1959. Through the 1970s and 1980s, its relatively affordable housing attracted renters and absentee landlords, though some young professionals priced out of the Beach Cities also chose to settle there. The city has worked to revitalize itself, completing the Beautify Lawndale urban renewal project in 2003 along Hawthorne Boulevard and opening a community center in 2012. At the 2020 census, Lawndale had a population of 31,807.
