Venice, a neighborhood on the Westside of Los Angeles County, was founded by wealthy developer Abbot Kinney in 1905 as a seaside resort town originally called "Venice of America." Located fourteen miles west of Los Angeles, the resort featured several miles of canals Kinney had dug to drain marshes, a twelve-hundred-foot pier complete with an auditorium and dance hall, a hot salt-water plunge, and Venetian architecture designed by artist Felix Peano. The centerpiece was a gently sloping one-mile beach that drew thousands of visitors. Tourists arrived via the Pacific Electric Railway's "Red Cars" and toured the town by miniature railway and gondolas. The population grew rapidly from thirty-one hundred residents in 1910 to over ten thousand, with weekend tourism reaching fifty to one hundred fifty thousand visitors. The amusement pier expanded throughout the 1920s, eventually becoming the finest on the West Coast with multiple roller coasters, a Dragon Slide, and other attractions. However, the town faced challenges including Kinney's death in 1920, a pier fire that December, and political turmoil worsened by Prohibition. By 1925, Venice's deteriorating roads, water, and sewage systems had become unmanageable. Following an election in November 1925, Venice consolidated with Los Angeles and was formally merged in 1926. After annexation, the city neglected the neighborhood's unique character. Most canals were filled in and paved over, and the area lost the distinctive charm that had defined its early decades as a popular resort destination.
