Lennox is a census-designated place in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County, California. Established as a small farming settlement around 1905 and named in 1912, Lennox grew from land that was formerly part of Daniel Freeman's vast rancho. By the 1920s, it had become an established community spanning seven square miles, with a Pacific Electric railway line running through its center along Hawthorne Boulevard.
The community's geography was dramatically altered when neighboring cities began annexing portions of it. Inglewood annexed the Arbor Vitae section in 1924, and though a 1925 ballot measure to annex another two square miles was defeated, Lennox steadily lost territory to both Inglewood and Hawthorne. By the early 1930s, despite its shrinking size to just over two square miles, Lennox had a population exceeding nine thousand people.
The post-World War II era brought significant change. The 1949 establishment of Los Angeles International Airport immediately to the west transformed the area, as residents found employment at the airport or in nearby aerospace industries. However, jet aircraft noise and pollution from the airport, combined with the construction of Interstate 405 and Interstate 105 in the 1950s and 1960s, created environmental challenges. By 1988, Lennox experienced pollution levels among the worst in the state.
Despite these obstacles, Lennox experienced substantial population growth during the 1970s and 1980s. The area became home to large numbers of immigrants from Mexico and Central America, drawn by inexpensive rental housing and proximity to employment. Today, Lennox is over ninety percent Latino and represents one of the largest concentrations of Latino residents on Los Angeles County's western side.
