By the American period, the once-thriving mission vineyards had fallen into disrepair, though the church continued in use. The city incorporated on April 24, 1913, with a population of 1,500. Today, San Gabriel covers 4.1 square miles and is bordered by San Marino to the north and other San Gabriel Valley communities. According to the 2020 census, the city has a population of 39,568, with a median age of 42.8 years. The city maintains parks and recreation programs for residents and features a hot-summer Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters.
