Cole of California began as West Coast Knitting Mills, established in 1917 by F.L and Joseph Drane in Vernon, California, where it produced men's underwear and socks and became the largest knitting mill in the western United States. In the early 1920s, Morris Cohn obtained an interest in the company, and his son Fred Cole, who had worked as a silent movie actor before joining the family business, convinced his family to launch a women's swimwear line. In 1925, Cole introduced the revolutionary "Hollywood Swimsuit," a sleeveless design with a low back and short skirt that challenged the modest standards of the era when swimsuits featured sleeves and knee-length legs. The colorful suit, made with elastic to fit the body snugly, proved immediately popular despite being considered daring for its time.
The company continued to innovate under designer Margit Fellegi, whom Cole hired in 1936. That same year, Cole pioneered the use of cotton as the primary swimsuit material, departing from the wool industry standard. The firm gained further recognition through endorsements by actress and swimmer Esther Williams from 1948 to 1952. After Morris Cohn's death in 1941, Fred Cole renamed the firm Cole of California. The "Scandal Suit," introduced in 1964 with its distinctive deep V-neck and mesh inlay, became the first swimsuit to achieve one million dollars in sales and is now housed in the Metropolitan Museum's permanent collection. Fred Cole sold the company in 1960 to Kayser-Roth, and it subsequently changed hands multiple times before being acquired by the InMocean Group.
