El Monte is a city in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, situated between the San Gabriel and Rio Hondo Rivers. The first permanent residents arrived around 1849 to 1850, primarily from Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri, drawn by the fertile agricultural land. These early settlers, including Nicholas Schmidt, Ira W. Thompson, and others, established homesteads and built a prosperous farming community. By the 1860 census, El Monte had grown to a population of 1,004 residents. As of the 2020 census, El Monte had a population of 109,450, making it the 66th-most populous city in California.
