Rosemead, a city in Los Angeles County, California, is home to 51,185 residents according to the 2020 census. The area sits within a cluster of west San Gabriel Valley communities experiencing a growing Asian-American population.
Long before modern settlement, the region was home to the Kizh people, also known as the Tongva or Gabrieleños. The Spanish established Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in 1771, initially at a location near present-day Whittier Narrows before relocating in 1775 to avoid spring flooding. During the Spanish Colonial era and subsequent Mexican period, the land was administered by the mission and later distributed to private citizens under Mexico's 1833 Secularization Act. Most of present-day Rosemead was part of Rancho Potrero Grande, originally granted to Manuel Antonio Pérez, a Native American mayordomo at the mission, in 1845, and later transferred to Juan Matías Sánchez.
Anglo-American settlement began following the Mexican-American War and the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe. Pioneers John and Harriet Guess arrived in 1852 from Arkansas, later purchasing land and establishing a ranch they named Savannah. Fellow settlers Frank Forst and Leonard John Rose also arrived in the valley. Rose bred and trained horses on approximately 600 acres, naming his ranch "Rose's Meadow," which eventually became shortened to Rosemead and gave the city its name. The pastoral community flourished with small farms producing vegetables, fruits, and grain. Rosemead officially incorporated as a city on August 4, 1959. Today, the city is part of a diverse region with significant Asian and Latino populations.
