Duarte is a city nestled in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, with a 2020 census population of 21,727. The area's human history stretches back around 500 B.C., when Shoshonean-speaking peoples, now known as the Tongva, settled in the San Gabriel Valley. Europeans first arrived in 1769 during an expedition led by Don Gaspar de Portolà. In 1771, Franciscans established Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, which drew most local Tongva into agricultural life. Following Mexican independence in 1821, mission lands were nationalized.
In 1841, Mexican governor Juan Bautista Alvarado granted nearly 7,000 acres to Andrés Avelino Duarte and his wife. The rancho's name derived from "Asukska-gna," a Tongva word meaning "skunk place." After the Mexican-American War, the territory passed to the United States in 1848. As Duarte incurred debts, he sold portions of his rancho, eventually losing the entire holding by 1878 despite winning his land grant case that year.
Duarte developed into a thriving agricultural community, particularly for citrus production, attracting settlers seeking its pleasant climate and fertile soil. The city is home to significant medical institutions, including the City of Hope National Medical Center, founded in 1913 as a tuberculosis sanitarium.
