Bassett is an unincorporated community in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. Located within the Census-designated places boundaries of Avocado Heights and West Puente Valley, the community carries the ZIP Code 91746 and uses area code 626.
The history of Bassett traces back to the Rancho La Puente land holdings. Joseph Workman, son of William Workman, owned 814 acres of the rancho property but borrowed against it. Unable to maintain his mortgage payments, the bank eventually acquired the land. In 1895, O.T. Bassett purchased the property and established Bassett Township, which would lend its name to the community. The region's early history remained contested for years. In 1921, Josephine Akley, the youngest child of Joseph Workman, filed a lawsuit to recover an interest in the Rancho La Puente land her father had sold. Though she initially won the case, the decision was reversed the following year in 1922.
The community is served by the Bassett Unified School District and is home to Bassett High School. The area is also notable for having produced Clyde Beck, a right-handed baseball infielder who played in Major League Baseball for the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds between 1926 and 1931. Beck was born in 1900 and passed away in 1988.
